The Philippines houses a 621 MWe Westinghouse reactor near Manila in Bataan, built from 1976 to 1984. Despite its construction, the reactor has never been fuelled or operated. Currently, there is interest in bolstering the country's energy supply, with options ranging from deploying the Bataan reactor to deploying Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) or new medium-sized reactors. The Philippines Nuclear Research Institute also operates a 3 MWth open pool research reactor.
A team of around 30 seasoned senior associates with extensive experience was assembled to offer assistance to Philippine companies looking to advance their nuclear program. The team has successfully produced a range of documents, presentations, and related materials, positioning them as subject matter experts ready to contribute to the advancement of the Philippines' nuclear initiatives. |

World Nuclear Association: Nuclear Power in the PhillippinesUpdated February 2023
"In response to the 1973 oil crisis, the Philippines began construction of a nuclear power plant. The 621 MWe Westinghouse unit at Bataan was completed in 1984 but never commissioned. With electricity demand expected to more than triple by 2040, energy security is a stated priority for the government. The country is exploring the feasibility of a nuclear power programme, including the possible revival of the Bataan project or constructing a small modular reactor." (WNA, 2023)
